Recipe: Tempura Fried Onion Rings

Besides using onions in just about everything I cook, I have also been making onion rings, for at least a week, since we harvested the first onions of the season. Onions are an essential in cooking, in my opinion, but I love just enjoying them for what they are and their awesome onion flavor.


1 onion (preferably white vidalia or sweet onion) sliced into rings
1 cup flour
1 egg
1 cup water
Salt and pepper


First make the tempura batter, combine flour, salt and pepper in one bowl, and egg and water in another. Mix both separately, then combine and mix together. Heat oil in frying pan enough to cover half of onion ring, dip onion rings into batter and place in hot oil, remove from oil when slightly browned.

I have been making these and eating them with a mayo mustard sauce:

Mayo-roughly 1/4 cup
1 healthy squirt of stone ground mustard
Spice with: chili powder, turmeric, red pepper, pepper, and garlic salt.

I have also considered using horseradish instead of mustard.
